Chris Chelios could probably still play a few decent shifts for an NHL team despite being 53 years old. I never thought “Chelly” would retire but he eventually did at the age of 48 after 26 seasons, tying Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, for the most seasons played. He holds the record for most games played by a defenseman with 1,651 with 664 coming with the Chicago Blackhawks, 578 with Detroit Red Wings, 402 with Montreal and seven with the Atlanta Thrashers.

He won the first of three Norris Trophy’s with the Canadiens in 1988-1989 when he set a career-high with 73 points. Chelios would be traded to Chicago for Dennis Savard and quickly became a fan favorite and one of the franchise’s greatest players of all-time. He matched his career-high of 73 points in 1992-1993 to take his second Norris and three years later scored 72 points for his third Norris.

Three years later, Chelios was traded to the Red Wings for Anders Eriksson and a pair of first round picks and he won his first Stanley Cup since he won with the Canadiens in 1986 when the Wings took the Cup in 2002 and won his third Cup in 2008. The 11-time All-Star was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013. His 948 points ranks third among American defenseman, his 2,891 PIM’s are more than 1,400 ahead of second place and his plus-350 is second all-time.
. Defenseman. Chicago Blackhawks.
