Phillies pitcher Chad Billingsley helped his own cause with a deep shot to left field on Sunday.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Chad Billingsley has hit just .142 since making his MLB debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 2006. That equates to a mere 49 hits in 345 career at-bats. He showed he’s capable of producing a bit of pop with the lumber on Sunday, though.

In the third inning of a then scoreless game against the New York Mets, Billingsley helped his cause as the starter for the Phillies with a deep shot to left field off Mets ace Bartolo Colon:

The solo shot gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead at the time as Billingsley had been doing his part on the mound at that point as well.

Unfortunately, his arm wasn’t as good as his bat for the rest of the affair as Billingsley gave up five earned runs and ultimately picked up the loss in the Phillies’ 7-4 defeat against the Mets.

Despite eventually taking the loss, Billingsley’s work with the bat is impressive. However, I can’t escape the wish that it had been a reversal of roles with Colon going deep off of Billingsley. Watching the portly Colon do just about anything is meme-worthy and top-notch entertainment. Him hitting a homer and then jogging the bases would be almost too much to handle.
