Courtney Hawkins, who plays for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, hit a passing train with his home run in yesterday’s game against Montgomery.

An incomplete list of priorities for a young person playing baseball often goes as follows:

  1. Do not embarrass yourself
  2. Hit something/someone important
  3. Win

White Sox prospect Courtney Hawkins was able to achieve that modest trifecta in his game yesterday against the Montgomery Biscuits when he hit a passing train with his home run.

From MiLB.com:

"“You can actually hear it,” Hawkins said of the train. “People let me know real quick. I wasn’t actually trying to hit it, but when it left the bat, you can hear everybody say, ‘Hit the train! Hit the train!’ It was pretty cool."

Hawkins plays outfield for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, where he has hit five home runs this year and 51 over the course of his short minor league career. This is the first one where he has abused freight, and it helped Birmingham to a 10-4 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits.

A first round pick in 2012, Hawkins is the Sox’s number 9 prospect and is hitting .243 in the minors this season.

For now, that ball is about to become the Magellan of baseballs. Hopefully the train rides to New Orleans, is loaded on a ship rounding the Cape of Good Hope, comes back through the Pacific to California, and rides the Union Pacific to get to Chicago while Hawkins plays for the White Sox.
