Baylor coach Art Briles claims that New York Jets fans will be very happy with QB Bryce Petty.

Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Matt Sims – Jets fans have not had much to cheer for in recent years. However, if Art Briles is correct, they could have their future franchise quarterback already on their roster.

Briles, head coach of the Baylor Bears, believes that Jets fans are “in for a big treat” with new quarterback Bryce Petty, according the Daily News. The Jets selected Petty in the fourth round of the draft.

Briles, who coached Petty at Baylor, believes that scouts doubting the quarterback’s ability to tradition are just plain wrong.

According to Briles, Petty has the skills needed to succeed in the NFL, system be damned.

"“He’s a great player,” Briles said. “Was Joe Montana in a system? Is Tom Brady in a system? Everybody’s in a system. It’s just about how you adapt. He’ll do well in whatever he’s asked to do… RG3 won an NFL East title and was NFL Rookie of the Year. Then he got ‘systemized.’ So, I mean, let them play.“A lot of other people have the same beliefs that run styles of the spread offense. It’s sprinkled throughout the league.”"

Just in case you weren’t paying full attention there, Briles compared Petty to (albeit, indirectly) to Joe Montana and Tom Brady, and then claimed that the reason RG3 is no longer succeeding in the NFL is because he was “systemized.” Ok.

Petty’s production at Baylor was impressive and he did a great job of taking over for the Robert Griffin III, his predecessor. Not an easy legacy to follow.

In his two seasons as Baylor’s starting quarterback, Petty passed for 61 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, racking up more than 8,000 yards in the process.
