Tigers Woods sends a heartwarming letter to a child who was bullied in school.

A positive story about Tiger Woods? How refreshing!

Woods’ story, though, begins with another one, the story of LPGA player Sophie Gustafson and Dillon, a 12-year-old boy who has become her friend. The two bonded over their mutual hardship – a stutter that affects speech.

Dillon’s stutter, however, resulted in ridicule from his schoolmates, so much so that he tried to commit suicide. Moved by her son’s struggles, Dillon’s mother sent Gustafson a letter, hoping to share his troubles with others who might benefit. Sophie obliged:

"“I keep re-reading his mum’s email to me and trying to figure out the best way to go about helping the kid,” Sophie wrote. “The mum asked me if there is anyone I knew that could help share his story. You are a journalist and a writer but I’m not sure how much of a story it is. A kid that’s different and that gets teased is happening every day, everywhere.”"

Interestingly enough, Tiger Woods suffered with a stutter as a child as well, eventually overcoming it. The story about Dillon, and his friendship with Sophie, moved Woods to the point that he decided to write Dillon an encouraging letter.

It seems as though Dillon was thankful to receive it.

This is an incredibly nice gesture from Tiger, who admittedly has made a few mistakes in the last few years, both in his personal life and on the golf course. It’s nice to see him give support to a young child who needs it.

Hopefully every time Dillon looks at that letter, he will pull strength from it.
