Wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who last played for the Jets in 2013 and is now out of the league, was arrested and charged for DUI on May 4th, according to a story by Bleacher Report. His DUI was considered an “extreme DUI” as he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20, which is more than twice the legal limit. He has had a DUI incident before, back in 2010 when he was with the Jets. The incident occurred on a Tuesday and caused controversy and people wanted him benched for the following Sunday’s game. He ultimately only sat out one quarter in the game.
Edwards was last seen in the NFL in 2013, when he was waived from Jets after signing a second contract with them when he was let go by the Seahawks. He was originally a high draft pick, having been chosen third overall in 2005. He spent time with the 49ers and Browns, before ending up with the Jets and briefly, the Seahawks. His exit from the league was rather anticlimactic, much like his performance on the field that got him to that point in the first place.
Over his eight year career, he’s caught passes for more than 5,500 yards and hauled in a total of 40 touchdown passes. One of his former teammates on the Jets, Bart Scott expressed some concern over Edwards’ recent arrest, as told to TMZ.
“I care about him a whole lot. He’s really a great guy,” Scott says … “but he has to get a handle on it. He’s putting himself and other people’s lives in danger.”
He said he plans to get in touch with Edwards, whom he’s known since the two went to high school in Detroit together. He said that Edwards has the support of all the guys he grew up with and Scott wants him to know that. Scott added that he thinks a lot of players don’t understand that only a few drinks can lead to alcohol levels that will get you popped for a DUI if you get caught.
Edwards’ story is somewhat of a sad one, having come into the league with high hopes and having it slide slowly down the drain. He’s never quite lived up to expectations on the field, but he could certainly be a better example off it.
