Early DraftKings Pitcher Picks – May 14

Welcome back to the première website to get expert fantasy advice, including Starting Pitcher Selections for DraftKings Daily Fantasy Baseball contests.

I am continuing the Meatloaf theme, as the “Two of Three Ain’t Bad” applied again yesterday for my picks. Sonny Gray was great (29.95 FP), John Lackey was not (5.4 FP), and hopefully you heeded my “Stay Away” warning on Gio Gonzalez who rewarded his owners with a whopping 0.65 FP. Because Gio was owned a lot (up to 40%) in DK contests, I (and hopefully you) was able to win my regular 50/50 despite Lackey’s lackluster number (pun intended). Beautiful thing about fantasy baseball is that you don’t have to get every pick right to be successful, just a majority of them. Let’s keep up the winning ways!

There are only five games in the early slate today that starts at 12:10 pm. Below are my picks for Thursday afternoon May 14th, 2015. Good Luck!

Anibal Sanchez (DET) home vs. MIN for $9200: Sanchez (13.3 FPPG) is 2-4 with a 5.44 and 1.28 WHIP, and has been up and down all year. Unfortunately, when he has been down it’s been real bad with 3 outings giving up five or more ERs. However, going into his last start vs. KC he had strung together three quality starts, including a 7 IP 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K line vs. MIN on 4/28. Regardless of the inconsistency, he will usually give you innings (6+ IP in 6 of 7 starts) and strikeouts (37 in 43 IP), which plays to the DK scoring system. He’s at home for the heavily favored Tigers (-160) facing the Twins, who are hitting a measly .241 vs RHP (21st in the ML). With so few solid options at SP on the early slate, Sanchez is actually as good of a bet as any to get you 20+ FP on Wednesday.

  • Travis Wood (CHI) home vs. WAS for $7100:  Wood has been mediocre this season, going 2-2 with a 4.96 ERA. But he does have 38 Ks in 36 2/3 IP and a respectable 1.22 WHIP. However, this pick is more about who Wood is pitching against than Wood himself. The Mets have lost 11 of 18, including 3 in a row in Chicago scoring five runs in the process. The Mets are 25th in the MLs in scoring and 23rd in hitting. Plus, the wind will be blowing in at Wrigley at over 10 mph. This is a low risk, high reward pick with Wood at $7100 pitching at home for the -125 favorite Cubs.

Stay Away: Michael Wacha (STL) at CLE for $9000. The talented righty has great numbers (5-0, 210 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) and obviously he’s going to get some action, but even more so today because of who he’s playing for and who he’s playing against. But Wacha is not a big strikeout pitcher (19 Ks in 38 2/3 IP) and faces an Indian team that is the 2nd hardest team to strike out (202 Ks in 1077 AB) in the majors. For $9000 (2nd highest salary) in DK where strikeouts are worth two points, I would look elsewhere.
