Cowboys DE Greg Hardy had 10 firearms seized by police, which will now either be sold or auctioned off.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy had 10 guns related to his domestic violence incident seized by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Those 10 firearms will not be going back to Hardy, who was under contract with the Carolina Panthers at the time of the alleged crime.

The Associated Press is reporting that a Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s spokesman has confirmed that the guns, which Hardy’s attorney relinquished to the police department in late February, will not remain in police custody and will be auctioned or sold off. The decision to sell or auction off the guns is mandated under a court order.

Hardy was convicted in July 2014 of assaulting his girlfriend and communicating threats. However, the case was dismissed in early February 2015 when Hardy’s accuser failed to show up to court right as the appeal trial was set to begin.

In the alleged incident, Hardy and his accuser were out drinking in Charlotte and returned home where Hardy became violent. Hardy allegedly then threw her off of the bed, into the bathtub, and then onto a futon that was covered with rifles. Hardy also allegedly tore a necklace off the accuser, tossed the jewelry into the toilet, and then slammed the lid of the commode onto her arm as she tried to retrieve it.

In terms of threats, Hardy also allegedly put his hands around the accuser’s throat and threatened to kill her.

Perhaps the strangest part of the alleged incident is Hardy’s attempt to cover up the incident with a 911 call in which he told the accuser that she was going to jail.

Hardy will miss the first 10 games of the 2015 NFL season after signing with the Cowboys for a one-year deal that was laden with incentives and only fully-guaranteed for the time that he’s on the field.

As far as the guns go, it’s a strange move by the police department to sell or auction off these firearms. Regardless of your stance on gun control, these particular guns serve as a weird memento for a domestic violence incident that shouldn’t be enshrined in any sort of way.
