Convicted murderer Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was sentenced to death for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing two years ago.

Two years after the Boston Marathon bombings claimed the lives of three people and injured 260, the sole surviving perpetrator has been sentenced to death.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who along with is brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, used pressure cooker bombs to murder three people at the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 2013, and today he was handed down the ultimate sentence for his role in the crime.

It’s a truly an unprecedented ruling, as it’s the first time in the post-9/11 era that a terrorist has been convicted and sentenced to death for his or her act.

There were three victims of the Boston Marathon bombing: Lingzi Lu, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student; Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford; and 8-year-old Martin Richard. While this brings resolution to the case of what to do with Dzhokhar, it brings closure to the fight these families have had to endure to get justice for their loved ones.

According to the AP, it’s not known when the death penalty will formally be imposed but it’s something that is no doubt coming.

"U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr. will formally impose the sentence at a later date during a hearing in which bombing victims will be allowed to speak. Tsarnaev will also be given the opportunity to address the court."

This is the second time in 25 years that a major terroristic act has seen it’s perpetrator sentenced to death. Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995, and was executed in 2001. No date for Tsarnaev’s execution has been yet set.
