The Washington Redskins’ decision to not re-sign veteran wide receiver Santana Moss earlier this week marked the end of an era for the franchise.
Moss has spent the last 10 seasons in a Washington uniform, many of them as the team’s primary target. In his 14-year NFL career, which started off with four years with the New York Jets, Moss has totaled 10,283 receiving yards and 66 touchdowns.
However, Moss’ production had dropped steeply over the past couple of seasons, as age began to catch up with him. The Redskins added fourth-round pick Jamison Crowder, an all-purpose yards monster with a similar skill set to Moss, leaving little need for a slot receiver who will turn 36 years old before the season.
It might seem like a logical time for Moss to retire. However, he isn’t ready to call it quits yet, believing he will find another job before training camp, according to 247Sports.com.
"“I’ve got another year in me…I’m a free agent right now, you know how they do us old guys,. I’m going on my 15th year. Right now my agent is talking with some teams to see what’s going to be my best scenario. Right now I’m just chilling, just enjoying life, and enjoying this off time.”"
If anyone does pick up Moss, it won’t be due to his numbers over the past couple of seasons. Moss appeared in only 10 games in 2014, catching 10 passes for 116 yards. That followed a 2013 performance of 42 catches for 452 yards, albeit with a mess of a quarterback situation in Washington.
However, Moss still has a chance of landing at least a training camp invite since he can help fill out a roster for a very cheap price. A couple of teams could use the depth and will likely take a look at Moss.
The Cleveland Browns stand out in the likely landing spot department. Cleveland has very little depth at receiver, allowing Moss to challenge the back of the depth chart.
Another possible fit could be the Atlanta Falcons. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who had the same role with Washington from 2010-2013, makes heavy use of the slot receiver, and the Falcons no longer have Harry Douglas in the role.
A training camp invite doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, and Moss will be in a battle no matter where he ends up. As the season approaches and injuries pile up, he still may be able to find a job somewhere.
No matter what happens next with Moss, he will be remembered as a cornerstone of the Redskins’ franchise for the past decade.
