Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera joins 400 home run club
By Len Nunes
Miguel Cabrera has moved into a tie for 52nd overall in MLB homeruns hitting number 400 today.
Almost a month after his 32nd birthday, Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has joined the 400 home run club. Miggy joins Adrian Beltre who hit his 400th home run yesterday and 51 other players to reach the milestone.
Beltre just turned 36 years old last month, so I’m suggesting Cabrera will end his career with more home runs.
There is one catch to Miggy’s 400th home run though, the weather needs to co-operate in St. Louis. The game started after a 88 minute rain delay. If the game cannot make it through 5 innings, the game does not become official. If the game does not become official, Miggy loses the homerun.
Can you imagine the clenched butts in Major League Baseball’s head offices as they ponder if they could really lose a milestone because Mother Nature is being cranky. The issue is not whether or not Miggy can simply re-hit his 400th home run. The issue here is how baseball can protect themselves from losing milestones to weather.
As noted in the television broadcast, maybe MLB should think twice about scheduling inter-league games in places like St. Louis in mid-May. There are so many domed options and Sun Belt options available, the point is valid.
Next on the home run list for Miggy to overtake, Duke Snider with 407 home runs.
