People would love to see Gennady Golovkin get into the ring with Floyd Mayweather, and apparently GGG would be up for it

Saturday night Gennady Golovkin will defend his 160-pound title against Willie Monroe Jr., but make no mistake about it, people really only want to see GGG step into the ring with one person: Floyd Mayweather. There are some that believe the young knockout specialist can be the one to end Floyd’s reign of dominance.

Apparently, GGG would love for nothing more than to have the opportunity to do so.

In promoting his fight with Monroe this past week, Golovkin was asked about the potential of fighting Mayweather, and while he admitted that it’d be difficult to get all the right pieces in place for it to happen, he’d certainly be up for the challenge of taking down the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

“Just for Floyd, yeah – 154 (pounds). It’s hard fight for us,” Golovkin told a small group of reporters this week. “I know Floyd is very smart, he is businessman. He want fight with me? OK, let’s do it.”

For the fight to happen, they would have to meet in the middle at 154, something that people think Floyd would not be willing to do. We can see from the comments this week that GGG would gladly drop the weight to make it happen, but would Mayweather be willing to throw on a few pounds for it? The chances of him going out of his way with something like that in this stage of his career seems pretty unlikely.

But, as Golovkin said, Mayweather is a businessman, and fighting GGG would definitely be best for business. The powerful offense of Golovkin against the outstanding defense of Mayweather would bring in a lot of pay-per-view buys, that’s for sure.
