Steven Gerrard says he would ‘seriously consider’ being Liverpool manager
By Jack Crosby
Steven Gerrard may very well return to Liverpool some day, but could it be as the manager of the club?
Steven Gerrard played his final match for Liverpool on Saturday in what was one of the emotional days for the club that we’ve seen in quite some time. Despite the fact that Gerrard is moving on his career after a long stint as the face of Liverpool, there are still people holding out hope that he’ll make a return some day.
But, could that return not be as someone on the pitch playing, rather as the man running the entire show? Basically, could we see Steven Gerrard as the manager of Liverpool somewhere down the line?
He certainly is open to that possibility.
In an interview with the Liverpool Echo following Saturday’s match, Gerrard was asked if he would consider a return to the club as the manager, and he seems pretty open to the idea.
“If I’m in a position that I feel I am good enough and can contribute and help to this club and do a good job as a manager and the role is offered to me, I would consider it really seriously,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.
After 688 appearances with Liverpool throughout his career, Gerrard managing one of the most high-profile clubs in the world, the same club he has captained for so long, seems like the best fit in the world.
Speaking of the pressure of being the Liverpool manager, though, Gerrard did also note that he will be cautious in making the decision, should the opportunity ever arise.
“If in five or 10 years time I get offered it and I don’t feel I am good enough, and there is a danger of ruining my reputation or showing myself up, I won’t go near it,” Gerrard said. “This is a brutal club to get it wrong at. You see what happened, for example with Roy Hodgson. He never got enough time, in a short space of time and he was out. You have got to be ready for it, you have to have the right backing, a certain amount of time to get it right. A lot of things have to be considered before you take on a role like that, and you have to be good enough.”
Gerrard has admitted before that he’d be open to managing his club in the future, and with these comments, the possibility seems as if it will always be on the table.
