The Miami Dolphins became the first team to sign a quarterback from the class of 2012 to a contract extension when they extended Ryan Tannehill through 2020 on Monday. The contract is six years and $96 million with $45 million guaranteed, per Bleacher Report. That quarterback class famously includes Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin III. The Dolphins official Twitter announced the move.

In late April, the Dolphins were talking about whether they were picking up Tannehill’s fifth-year option, which they did, despite the fact that they were talking long-term with his camp since January. A deal was obviously not imminent by the deadline earlier in the month, but the sides continued to talk and the result is a big multi-year extension for Tannehill.

Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum had nice things to say about his signal-caller, calling Tannehill an “ascending talent” and that he was thrilled the team was able to extend him.

Tannehill was the eighth-overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and has started every game in his three-year career and thrown for 11,252 yards, completing 1,029 of 1,662 passes. He has thrown 63 touchdowns to 42 interceptions and holds a career passer rating of 84.0. He’s also had some success on the ground, rushing for 760 yards in 145 attempts, picking up two touchdowns.

The unfortunate part is that Tannehill hasn’t led the Dolphins to a winning season in his three seasons with the team. sitting at 23-25. Though the blame for that can’t always fall on the quarterback. The Dolphins haven’t exactly fielded an amazing team in that time and you can’t forget the bullying scandal or the reports that receiver Mike Wallace refused to play at times last season.

This year, the Dolphins have made a few splashes, including the signing of Ndamukong Suh. So you might be warranted in thinking that their stock is due to go up. That, and the New England Patriots are likely starting the season with quarterback Tom Brady suspended for four games.

Either way, finding even above-average quarterbacks in the league is hard so the Dolphins obviously want to hang on to theirs.
