Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jesse Williams was diagnosed with papillary Type 2 cancer and is undergoing kidney surgery, according to the team’s official website. Williams, 24, who played college football at the University of Alabama, was Seattle’s fifth-round selection in 2013.

General manager John Schneider released the following statement on the sad situation:

“Jesse is an extraordinarily tough individual who has overcome a great deal in his life and we will support him in any way possible. He is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Williams also released a statement, showing that he is ready to fight this ugly battle.

“Although disappointing, I am a fighter and will handle this. I am going to focus on my health and fighting this battle with a return to football as my ultimate goal. Thank you for your thoughts and support. Go Hawks!”

In two seasons, Williams has gone to the Super Bowl in both campaigns as a reserve, winning a ring in 2013. In those years, Williams has not recorded any statistics due to a pair of knee injuries. Hopefully, Williams can put this scare behind him and get back on the field to further his career.

This is not the first time we have seen an NFL player get cancer. In November, Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry was diagnosed with Hogdkin Lymphoma. Berry is finishing up his chemo treatments and might be able to return to football at some point, although there is nothing imminent. Berry missed the final five games of last season but has not been ruled out to return in 2015.

Both men are young and in great shape, so perhaps they can bounce back from these illnesses and provide an example to others afflicted by this sickness. It’s terrible to see anyone, at any point in their lives, have to fight cancer.
