Rick Mahorn predicted Pistons would in No. 1 pick in draft lottery
Rick Mahorn, former Detroit Pistons rim protected, predicts that the Pistons are going to get the no. 1 pick in the NBA Draft Lottery.
Rick Mahorn is known for his role on the 1989 “Bad Boy” Pistons that won the national title. He wasn’t ever afraid to knock you on your behind if you tried to make your way into the lane with a hard foul or two. His physical style of play is what he is most known for and part of the reasons the Pistons received their notorious reputation and nick name.
One thing he isn’t known for his predictions. But that didn’t stop him from making a pretty bold prediction for the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA Lottery tonight. As he sat court-side at the Warriors and Rockets game waiting to get underway, he went ahead and said Detroit was going to land the no. 1 overall pick.
I don’t know if Mahorn knew, but the Pistons aren’t even remotely close to getting the no. 1 overall pick. In fact, they have exactly a 2.8% chance at getting it. Maybe one of those hard hits he gave out in the 1989 season knocked him on his head a bit. Or maybe he is just way too overconfident and optimistic about his former team. But it’s not like it hasn’t happened before.
In 2008, the Chicago Bulls had exactly a 1.7% chance of landing the first overall pick. They got awfully lucky though, and ended up snagging it out from under other NBA teams with way better odds. They ended up drafting Derrick Rose with that pick, who has been plagued with injuries ever since, causing frustration and problems in the Bulls organization. So maybe they weren’t as lucky as originally thought.
That being said, if the Pistons get the no. 1 overall pick it might do worlds for their roster. With many legitimate big men out there like Jahlil Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns, who knows what they would do for the Pistons who might be a solid selection for a playoff berth next season.
