Four finalists named to host Super Bowl 53, Los Angeles in the mix?
Roger Goodell confirmed the four finalists to host Super Bowl 53 and Los Angeles is also in the mix to host the game in the near future.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke at the owner’s meetings on Wednesday afternoon where he touched on a variety of topics ranging from Deflategate, the new rule changes and cities vying to host Super Bowl 53.
The four cities that are the finalists for Super Bowl XLIII are Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Miami which are no strangers to hosting the Super Bowl and major sporting events. The three cities that aren’t chosen to host the game will be in the running to host the game in 2020 along with Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The catch is Los Angeles needs to have a team by the 2019 season, which could be tricky considering the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams have made efforts to remain where they are.
If there is a team in Los Angeles by this team, I would expect they would be the overwhelming favorite to host the Super Bowl for the first time since 1993 when the Dallas Cowboys throttled the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl XVII.
Los Angeles has hosted the Super Bowl seven times and an eighth time seems like an inevitability at this point. It would make for an idyllic scene and wonderful atmosphere that only the Super Bowl can generate, but the NFL can’t go wrong with any of the other cities either. They’re all warm locales with experience hosting the game.
In the meantime, Santa Clara, Calif. is the host city for Super Bowl 50, Houston has Super Bowl 51 and Super Bowl 52 will be played in Minnesota’s new stadium.
