Every time you think you have seen it all in baseball, something new happens.  Now introducing: strikeout triples.

After a two hour and 15 minute rain delay, Gregor Blanco stepped up to the plate to finally start the game between the Giants and Rockies. Colorado starter Jordan Lyles, making his second start since having a line drive hit his pitching hand, struck out Blanco, and that’s where the story should end.

Blanco swung and missed on strike three, but the ball got away from catcher Nick Hundley. Hundley then scrambled for the ball to throw out the runner charging down the line. Apparently he did not read the script before the game.

There you have it folks, a strikeout triple.

FanSided’s dedicated Rockies site, Rox Pile, summed up the inauspicious start to this game quite nicely:

Blanco would end up being stranded on third base, though his Giants would win the game.

And, in case you never saw the picture of Jordan Lyles’ hand after being belted by a comebacker on May 13th:

Strikeout triples are much preferred to pitchers being hit by comebackers.
