Chip Kelly had all of the control and power at Oregon, and living under NFL rules and restrictions could drive him back to college football.

Back in his days coaching the Oregon Ducks, Chip Kelly was ‘the man’. He had all of the power, all of the control and barely had to abide by NCAA rules. Once he jumped to the NFL though, that all changed and Kelly was suddenly subjected to following rules that put him on level ground with other coaches in the NFL — something he can’t be pleased with.

This might be something that builds to a point where it pushes Chip Kelly out of the NFL and back to college football. It wouldn’t be the first time that this happened and it wouldn’t be the last.

Jeff Darlington from NFL Network connected a story about Nick Saban’s time with the Miami Dolphins to Chip Kelly’s current situation with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“It reminds me a lot of Spurrier and Saban,” Darlington said on Yahoo! Radio. “[Saban] hated that you could only draft one player in the first round and you couldn’t just recruit twenty first-round caliber picks. He wanted to go out and get all of that without having to worry about the luck involved with one draft pick.”

Darlington then linked the Saban situation to his theory about what might drive Chip Kelly away from the NFL and back to the college ranks.

“I wonder if the Marcus Mariota situation will, privately behind the scenes, frustrate Chip Kelly so much that a guy who fit so well in his system he could not get based on where he was picking in the draft — I wonder if that element doesn’t also drive Chip Kelly out of the game.”

That’s all speculation but it makes a lot of sense.

Kelly can’t be happy with the way he has to follow rules, abide by regulations and not use his own power and prowess as an advantage over the rest of the competition. That’s the nature of the NFL though, and while it has pushed some out of the game, it’s not a guarantee to do so with Kelly.

At least, not yet.
