Fantasy Football: Pittsburgh Steelers Season Preview
By Bruce Matson
Pittsburgh Steelers Season Preview
The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the season last year with an 11-5 record. Sneakily, the Steelers had an explosive offensive in 2014 finishing 2nd in the league in yardage (6,577). Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell finished top-5 in fantasy at each of their positions. The Steelers is one of the few teams to feature a stud wide receiver and a stud running back in fantasy on their team. I expect the Steelers offense to be very productive again this year.

Ben Roethlisberger
Roethlisberger finished the season ranked 5th in the league in fantasy points among QBs with 428.70. He had two weeks last year where he passed for 6 TDs, which inflated his stats a little bit. Roethlisberger has the potential to finish in the top-5 again this year, but he is more than likely going to finish as a low-end QB1 to a mid QB2. Roethlisberger is going to be a great value if he falls in the later rounds of your fantasy draft, because he is capable of providing high-end production on any given week. Roethlisberger will also be a trendy play in DFS this year.
Running Backs
Le’Veon Bell
Finished the season ranked 1st among running backs in fantasy points with 375.00 points. Bell is going to be suspended for the first 3 games of the season. Even with the suspension Bell is going to be worth a top pick in your fantasy draft. Bell averaged 23.43 fantasy points a game last year, and once he’s back from suspension you’re going to want his production in your line up.
The Steelers picked up Williams during free agency this year. Williams is 32 years old, and he has a lengthy injury history. There are reports stating that Williams isn’t expected to get the bell cow running back role during Bell’s 3 game suspension. Williams is going to be a trendy hand-cuff to draft in the later rounds, but I feel that he’s risky, and I’m not going to draft him on any of my teams.

There’s not much to see here. He may get some passing down work when during Bell’s suspension, but that’s about it.
Wide Receivers
Antonio Brown
Brown is a stud wide receiver and he’s a very safe player to draft. He doesn’t have an extensive injury history, and he gets peppered with targets from Roethlisberger. Brown finished the season ranked 1st among wide receivers in fantasy points with 392.10, and he ranked 9th overall. Brown averaged 24.5 fantasy points a game last year. The odds are against Brown to repeat as the top wide receiver in fantasy, but he’s a good candidate to finish in the top-5 this year.
Bryant had a good season last year catching 8 TDs. Bryant had a few big games last season, but most of his games was dismal when it came to fantasy production. There’s a chance that he develops some this off-season and can be more of a dependable fantasy asset. Bryant carries a lot of risk, because most of the targets are going to go to Brown and Bell, which will leave Bryant with sporadic production. Unless Bryant develops into more of a reliable receiver he is not going to get enough targets to warrant being a weekly fantasy starter.
Wheaton missed a few games last year due to injury. He wasn’t a stud in fantasy last year, but he had some serviceable games, scoring more than 10 fantasy points (PPR) in 6 of his games last year. Wheaton has some value in PPR leagues, but next to no value in standard leagues. Wheaton is a player that is more than likely going to go undrafted in a lot of your drafts, but he could fill a void for you at receiver if he’s facing a favorable match up.
Tight Ends
If you like drafting your tight end late in your fantasy draft to maximize value at other positions then you are going to love Heath Miller. Miller is one of Roethlisberger’s favorite targets, and Rothlisberger loves to target Miller around the end zone. Miller doesn’t have top-5 tight end upside, but with the amount of targets that he is going to get he’s will have the potential to be a top-12 tight end in fantasy. The downside with Miller is his extensive injury history, and the odds are a little higher that he could miss some weeks due to injuries.
Defense/Special Teams
The Steelers defense finished the year ranked 16th in fantasy points scoring 105 points. They had 4 weeks during the season where they were fantasy relevant by scoring 10 points or more during those weeks. The Steelers defense is a unit that is rebuilding, and I wouldn’t expect a top-12 performance this season out of them, but they are going to be good enough to stream during the weeks where they have a favorable match up.
