The four-time major champion is not playing his best golf at an important time.

With just over two weeks until the U.S. Open tees off at Chambers Bay, one of the best players in the world is going through a rare poor run of form.

Since winning the Wells Fargo Championship on May 14, Rory McIlroy has been struggling mightily. At the BMW PGA Championship last week, McIlroy missed the cut after putting up a 71 and 78 in the first two rounds.

That was minor compared to his issues this week. During the opening round of the Irish Open on Thursday, McIlroy recorded a mind-boggling 80 without recording a single birdie, eventually missing the cut after shooting 71 in the second round.

McIlroy was probably hoping for a bit better just ahead of one of the biggest tournaments of the year. The 26-year-old is searching for his fifth major title and second U.S. Open win after winning the tournament in 2011 at Congressional Country Club, the first major of his career.

At this point, it might be hard for McIlroy to get much actual play in before heading to Chambers Bay. A few have suggested that McIlroy will add a late event next week, but it seems more likely that he will just head to the range to try and sort things out.

While McIlroy obviously isn’t in an ideal situation, his past two tournaments will likely be more of a fluke than a long-lasting problem. McIlroy dominated the Wells Fargo Championship just two weeks ago with a -21 and was in the mix at both The Masters and The Players Championship earlier in the year.

In the end, it’s much more likely that McIlroy is a factor at Chambers Bay rather than it is that he continues to struggle and misses a third consecutive cut.
