Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was harassed at the Byron Nelson Classic golf tournament by an 18-year-old man on Saturday, leading to police and security officials having to intervene, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Per the story, Manziel was attending the event in Irving, Texas when he came across a youngster who had words for Manziel. After being harassed near the pool at the Four Seasons hotel, Manziel made a poor decision to throw a water bottle at the man. At that point, hotel security and local police got involved, leading to this picture.

It is of paramount importance to understand that Manziel, nor the fan, were charged with any crimes. Also, there was no evidence of alcohol playing a role for Manziel’s part. Earlier this offseason, Manziel spent 10 weeks in rehabilitation before being released on April 11.

Manziel was clearly being attacked verbally from all reports, but he needs to be an adult and walk away. There has been no indication that Manziel was physically assaulted in any way. If that remains the case, Manziel simply has to put his head down and move on. Many will be jealous of the money and fame Manziel has at such a young age, while other simply don’t like him from things they have read and seen.

For the Heisman Trophy winner, these times are things are going to keep happening. Undoubtedly, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady get heckled and harassed outside of their homes on a regular basis (it’s truly a sad commentary on society) but they maintain a level head. Manziel must learn to defuse situations by simply letting them go.

In the end, this is an event that could have been much worse. Somebody could have gotten hurt, charges could have been filed, etc. Luckily, both parties walk away with a chance to be smarter. For Manziel, and the Browns, hopefully the quarterback takes advantage of this opportunity.
