High-Risk Options

62. Walker showed why he’s such a good prospect throwing eight scoreless innings in his last start against the the Indians allowing just two hits and no walks and striking out eight.  However, he still has a 6.18 ERA on the season, so he has a long way to go. In good news, for those looking for upside, he has a 1-1 record in four starts at home with a 2.22 ERA while getting crushed on the road (1-4, 9.79 ERA). Since he’s at home this afternoon, you could choose to roll the dice, but it would be a major gamble.. Seattle Mariners. vs Yankees. Taijuan Walker. 26. player

2. Hughes has been solid but not spectacular lately and the Red Sox have knocked him around in the past including scoring four runs against him last week in his most recent start. Boston’s offensive struggles give him a small upside, but you can probably do better if your hunting for a cheap starter.. Minnesota Twins. @ Red Sox. Phil Hughes. 25. player

8. De La Rosa can be helpful if you need strikeouts (59 in 64 innings), but his ERA of 4.50 and the fact that he has allowed four runs or more in four starts in his last six outings is a high price to pay for his K’s.. Arizona Diamondbacks. vs Braves. Rubby De La Rosa. 23. player

Hudson has been all over the map with two good outings sandwiched around a stinker in his last three. The Giants are looking to avoid a sweep at home which seems like the situation where a veteran like Hudson would step up, but I still think he’s risky since he just hasn’t proven he can be consistent.. San Francisco Giants. vs Pirates. Tim Hudson. 22. player. 31

Nelson has allowed four runs in three of his last five starts and has struggled on the road (1-3, 4.55 ERA). In a tough matchup today against the Cardinals, Nelson is a risky option with limited upside.. Milwaukee Brewers. @ Cardinals. Jimmy Nelson. 21. player. 76

135. The 21-year old McCullers continues to impress with a 2.40 ERA in his first three starts and 18 strikeouts in 15 innings.  The down side is that he has given up six walks during that time and has only made it through the fifth inning one time in those three outings. The potential is there, but he’ll need to be more efficient to be a fantasy option worth counting on.. Houston Astros. vs Orioles. Lance McCullers. 20. player

Detroit Tigers. vs Athletics. Anibal Sanchez. 19. player. 63. Sanchez may have figured some things out in his last start allowing just two runs in seven innings and striking out nine.  He has nine strikeouts or more in three of his last four starts, but he also has given up seven runs in a pair of those outings.  He’s still risky to play today with his 5.75 ERA, but there are signs Sanchez is coming around.
