The 147th Belmont Stakes is ready to go on Saturday, so let’s take a look at some of the winners in recent years.

American Pharoah will not only try to become the 147th winner of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, but also the 12th winner of the Triple Crown – something that hasn’t been done since 1978. There’s plenty of reasons to think he might do it too. He’s fast, that he’s proved in spades – most recently in the Preakness. He’s tough, as he showed in the Kentucky Derby. And he puts forth his best effort, evidenced in six consecutive wins by a total of 30 lengths.

Not only does he have some superior abilities over the rest of the field, but he also owns a pretty interesting tactical advantage. The field is going to be without much early speed, and that gives Pharoah the chance to grab the lead and control the race.

Unfortunately, Pharoah is no different in most respects from the other horses who have tried and failed to claim the final crown jewel. His pedigree is rife with sprinters, as are many modern racehorses, and in an age when horses run something like every five weeks, he’s at a big disadvantage with his three weeks of rest compared to the rest of the field. Many of the past Triple Crown hopefuls have simply come up short, as the mile and a half distance and three week rest caught up with them.

A few horses in the field have a chance to upset Pharoah, namely Frosted with his stretch-running style, Materiality and potential sleeper Keen Ice.

The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978. Here is a list of all the Belmont Stakes winners since affirmed claimed the carnations. You can see the rest here.
