Sammy Watkins still rehabbing hip injury
The Buffalo Bills have high expectations this season, but there could be a very serious problem brewing. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who dealt with an injured hip all of his rookie campaign in 2014, is still trying to recover from offseason hip surgery, according to Conor Orr of NFL.com.
Watkins has stated he will return to action soon, but for now is limited to lining up for routes (and then not running them out) and stretching on the sidelines during OTA sessions.
"“Mentally, I’ve got to get my reps,” Watkins said Wednesday, via The Buffalo News. “I’m behind. I’m not there every day with the guys running routes. So, mentally, I’ve got to watch the defense, the coverages, watch how things move because I’m going to be coming back soon. And everything’s got to be fast and I’ve got to pick it up.”"
Without Watkins, the Bills are without their top outside weapon. The offense still has some real talent with LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson, Charley Clay, Robert Woods and Percy Harvin, but Watkins is a big body and possesses elite speed. With the former Clemson star on the field, everything changes for the opposing defensive coordinator.
Last year, Watkins exploded onto the scene with Buffalo, catching 65 passes for 982 yards and six touchdowns, including a dramatic game-winner against the Minnesota Vikings.
Buffalo needs Watkins to become the great player many believe he can become. The Bills traded up with the Cleveland Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft to get Watkins, giving up a pair of first-round picks in the process. It would be surprising to see Watkins doing anything strenuous before training camp, which begins in late July.
