The Atlanta Braves added a much-needed piece to their offense when they traded for Cameron Maybin. Maybin was a good player for the San Diego Padres over the last three-plus seasons (only played 14 games in 2013). He has been playing well so far this season and should be added in more leagues.
With the Padres, Maybin hit 19 home runs, 105 RBI, 300:111 K:BB ratio with 74 stolen bases and a .246/.307/.358 line. The speed was clearly there, stole 40 bases in 2011, and showed some power. The Braves needed to replace Jason Heyward after the team traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. Heyward has more power, but everything else is similar.
This season, Maybin has five home runs and 27 RBI with 10 stolen bases, 34:17 K:BB ratio and a .296/.367/.420 line. He is on pace for 15 home runs, 80 RBI and 30 stolen bases. Anyone would love to have that kind of production on their fantasy team. Speed is rare to find, especially if you missed out on Billy Hamilton, Dee Gordon or Jose Altuve.
The Braves have made the move to bat Maybin at the top of the lineup, and it’s helped all around. When he’s batting first or second, Maybin has four home runs, 15 RBI, seven stolen bases and a .312 batting average. If he continues to bat at the top, he could finish as a top-40 outfielder. He will likely move back to No. 2 when Jace Peterson returns from his hand injury, but for now he’s hitting leadoff.
In the month of June (six games), Maybin has five multi-hit games with three stolen bases and five RBI. Maybin is an overall good player to have on your team. He helps with speed, average, on-base percentage, runs and even some power. While he belongs in NL-only or deeper mixed leagues, there is some value in the standard leagues.
Fantasy owners are taking note of Maybin’s recent production. He was owned in 18.6 percent of ESPN leagues last week. Now, he’s owned in 49.8 percent. If you need help across the board, Cameron Maybin is your guy. Get him now while he’s hot.
