Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova released from hospital
Cavs guard Matthew Dellavedova was taken to the hospital after the team’s Game 3 win and treated for cramping.
The Cleveland Cavaliers may have come away from Tuesday’s Game 3 win over the Golden State Warriors with a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals, but the team still came out of the game beaten up and hoping for better. In particular, the team was very concerned with the health of guard Matthew Dellavedova.

The second-year guard out of St. Mary’s College had just played the best game of his career, contributing 20 points, four assists, and five rebounds while logging 38-plus minutes of action. His contributions helps the Cavs earn a 96-91 win over the Warriors and secured a 2-1 series lead. However, things quickly turned from jubilation to scary in a matter of minutes.
After the game, Dellavedova experienced severe cramping due to dehydration and was forced to undergo an I.V. treatment rather than join the post-game press conference, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. After the cramping failed to subside in the locker room, Dellavedova was taken by ambulance to the Cleveland Clinic, where he spent the evening receiving additional treatment and was closely monitored.
However, all is well that ends well. After spending the night in the hospital, Marc Stein of ESPN has reported that Dellavedova is expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon.
While you want your players to give it their all night in and night out, few expect it to go to such extremes that require a one-night hospital stay afterwards. While the Cavs appreciate the effort, I’m sure they’d rather not repeat the incident.
Matthew Dellavedova has become a staple in Cleveland’s back-court during their postseason run to the NBA Finals. After averaging 20.6 minuted per game during the regular season, the injuries to Kyrie Irving have forced the second-year guard into the spotlight during the playoffs. While his per game minutes have only increased to 23.3 per game, his four starts in Irving’s absence have seen an average of 40-plus. Additionally he’s increased his production nearly across the board, from regular season numbers of 4.8 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per contest to 7.5 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per night.
The NBA Finals will resume on Thursday night at 9:00pm Eastern from Cleveland.
