Manny Pacquiao had no idea who Gennady Golovkin was

Maybe Gennady “GGG” Golovkin does need some more exposure, because Manny Pacquiao didn’t even know who he was

This past Saturday night when Miguel Cotto made pretty was work of Daniel Geale, earning the KO victory in the fourth round, all of the focus turned to who he would be putting his WBC Middleweight title up against next. The two options are Gennady Golovkin, and of course, Canelo Alvarez.

Now while there are a lot of people that would love to see Cotto get into the ring against the undefeated powerhouse Golovkin, they also believe that it would make more sense for him to take on a mega fight with Alvarez first because Alvarez is a lot more recognizable and could probably draw more money.

That’s the issue that Golovkin has: Not many people really know him yet here in the United States, even though he’s been tearing his way through the boxing world with knockout after knockout. But to put into perspective how people really don’t know all that much about the man they call “GGG,” this story from trainer Freddie Roach should open up some eyes.

At a press conference last week, Roach discussed how he likes Golovkin as a person –much like everyone else does– but his exposure has been so little that not even the great Manny Pacquiao knew who he was.

“He’s a very nice guy. I like the guy,” trainer Freddie Roach said. “But the thing is that when Manny Pacquiao walked by and didn’t know who he was – I was surprised because most fighters know other fighters and Manny Pacquiao had no idea who he was. If Manny Pacquiao doesn’t know who one of the best fighters pound-for-pound in the world is, there’s a lot of people who don’t know (him). And maybe that’s why he needs a little more exposure in America, I think.”

As fun as it is to watch Golovkin fight and as fun as it would be to see him step into the ring with Cotto or Alvarez eventually, the fact remains that Roach is not wrong; Golovkin needs some more exposure on this side of the world. If he gets more exposure, then that means a lot more money when the time does come for some sort of mega fight.

Manny Pacquiao not knowing who you are if you’re a fellow boxer is a problem.
