Atlanta Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski admits to drinking “rally beers” during games.

New baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has had a bumpy ride his first few months on the job. Once this video of Atlanta Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski openly chatting about drinking “rally beers” in the dugout during baseball games gets back to Mr. Manfred, one can only hope the new commissioner is wearing a seatbelt.

How and why a professional athlete would admit to drinking beer during a game while he is still employed by a team in the league has to be the first question asked. As a fan, no matter the sport you are watching, you are always told that there is a sacred code of secrecy when it comes to bench/locker room activities. When you consider who the player is that is breaking this sacred code, it is surprisingly unsurprising.

A.J. Pierzynski, the baseball player voted the most hated in a 2012 poll, opens up during this interview with the following quotes:

"“I’m not going to lie, I’ve had drinks before during a game”“Sometimes, you’re in the 15th inning of a game, and you’re six hours in, and one of the starting pitchers is 12 beers in, and you’re like, ‘Man, I’m really jealous of this guy over here.’ And then the next thing you know, they’re like ‘RALLY BEERS!’”"

A.J. Pierzynski does not indicate which team(s) he was a member of when drinking beers in the clubhouse. As this video gains more notoriety, questions will hopefully be asked at all of Pierzynski’s tenures: Minnesota Twins (1998–2003), San Francisco Giants (2004), Chicago White Sox (2005–2012), Texas Rangers (2013), Boston Red Sox (2014), St. Louis Cardinals (2014) and currently the Atlanta Braves.

Baseball is a game of integrity. Today’s fans are no fools, we all know every player on every club is not a role model. Yet as a league, a wholesome image must be portrayed.

Commissioner Rob Manfred hopefully steps into this situation to remind players that joking around in interviews about very touchy subjects such as alcohol consumption during a game is a definite no-no. Sadly, it is all commissioner Manfred can do since he can’t go all Michael Barrett on AJ Pierzynski and punch him in the mouth.
