Johnny Manziel will no longer be asking everyone to show him the money.

Johnny Manziel is a man known by many names. Johnny Football, Money Manziel, or even just Johnny have all been used as monikers for the enigmatic Cleveland Browns quarterback. It might be time to retire at least one of those nicknames now, though.

At the Browns’ facilities in Berea, Ohio, on Wednesday, Manziel spoke to the press and provided the breaking news that everyone in the world of the NFL has been waiting on: the money sign is no more.

Here’s Manziel delivering the news:

Manziel started using the celebration while he was becoming one of football’s most polarizing athletes at Texas A&M, but now he’s putting it in a box to gather dust.

Obviously we aren’t talking about something dire here, but you have to respect Manziel’s reasoning. The second-year quarterback is making a concerted effort coming into the 2015 season to not be a distraction to the Browns as a whole—like he was for much of last season—and he believes that eliminating the identifiable and often mocked gesture will help him do just that.

Who knows how retiring the money sign will affect Manziel’s performance on the field, if it does at all. That being said, up is the only direction he can go after he flamed out miserably in his rookie season.
