NFL playoffs: How your team can make it
Last season, the San Diego Chargers were 9-6 entering Week 17. All they had to do was beat the Kansas City Chiefs who were starting backup quarterback Chase Daniel. Unfortunately, San Diego could only muster one touchdown in a 19-7 defeat, sending it home before the postseason began. Going into 2015, the Chargers are improved and should be able to reach the postseason for the second time in three years.
After watching a sub-par offensive line last season, general manager Tom Telesco signed guard Orlando Franklin to a five-year deal. Telesco continued to upgrade the offense, signing receiver Stevie Johnson to replace Eddie Royal before drafting running back Melvin Gordon in the first round of the NFL Draft. With Gordon, Antonio Gates and quarterback Philip Rivers, San Diego has ample firepower in the loaded AFC West.
The defense isn’t anything special, but it appears good enough to win games. The secondary is the strong suit of this group, anchored by corners Jason Verrett and Brandon Flowers. All-Pro safety Eric Weddle is in the last year of his current contract and although upset with the team, he should be a force once again. The front seven is weak but does have a legitimate star in Corey Liuget at defensive end.
Overall, the Chargers are likely primed for another nine or 10-win season. Rivers is still at the peak of his powers and Gates is a monster in the red zone. The offensive line is improved enough to open holes for the electric Gordon, who has the speed to take any run for six points. Provided Rivers can stay upright – as he always does – the Chargers will be there at the end.
