Fantasy Football: San Francisco 49ers Season Preview

San Francisco 49ers Season Preview
The 49ers finished last season with an 8-8 record while placing 3rd in the NFC West Division. The 49ers don’t have any studs in fantasy, but they do have some players who will be available at a cheap discount in your fantasy drafts.

Kaepernick finished 16th last season among QBs with 332.35 points while averaging 20.77 points per game. Kaepernick had 5 games last season where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Kaepernick is going to be drafted in the middle rounds this season. He’s a safe QB to draft, because he has an elevated floor due to his rushing abilities. You can find QBs that can provide a similar fantasy output in the later rounds, but if you want to draft a QB that you don’t have to worry about busting on you then you may want to pay the premium for Kaepernick.

Hyde finished last season ranked 66th among running backs with 74.10 averaging 5.29 fantasy points per game. Hyde had 1 game last year where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. Hyde is going to be the guy to start out the season for the 9ers. He’s a thick bruising runner who is very good at catching the ball out of the backfield. Hyde is going to get his opportunity to show that he has the talent to be the bell cow back that the 9ers drafted. He’s going to get a lot of touches to start out the season, and that’s going to provide fantasy value to your team.
Bush finished last season ranked 43rd among running backs with 107.00 fantasy points on the year averaging 9.73 points per game. Bush had 4 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more while only playing in 11 games on the season. The 49ers acquired Bush during the offseason, and it appears that he’s going to be the pass catching specialist on the team. Bush is going really late in fantasy drafts and could pose as a value in drafts.
Add him to your watch list. The 9ers selected him in the 4th round of this year’s draft, and there’s a chance he could get some opportunities this year if Hyde or Bush were to get injured. Mike Davis is a similar when compared to Hyde, except that’s he’s a little smaller. Davis is very good at catching the ball out of the backfield and would serve as a value in PPR leagues.
Wide Receiver
Boldin finished 19th among wide receivers with 222.60 fantasy point while averaging 13.91 points per game. Boldin has 10 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and he had 4 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Boldin is a forgotten man in fantasy, but he’s very dependable and he is going to be a great value in your draft. Boldin has in ESPN ADP of 133.7 which is peanuts for a wide receiver that will be a solid flex play for your line up.
Smith finished last season ranked 29th among wide receivers with 193.20 fantasy points while averaging 12.08 fantasy points per game. Smith had 7 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. There 9ers acquired Smith during the offseason, and he’s going to be used to stretch the field. I don’t know how the relationship between Smith and Kaepernick is going to correspond to fantasy success, but I feel that the odds aren’t good for Smith to finish as a WR2 or better. I feel that Bolden is the receiver to own in this offense, and if anything, Smith’s ability to stretch the field will help Bolden more underneath.
Quinton Patton/Bruce Ellington/DeAndre Smelter
Put all of these receivers on your watch list, because if there was an injury to either Smith or Bolden then one of these guys will get an opportunity.
Tight End

Davis finished last season ranked 35th among tight ends scoring 65.90 fantasy points on the year while averaging 4.7 fantasy points per game. Davis is going to go late in your drafts this year, and could be a diamond in the rough for your fantasy team. He had a bad season last year while playing with injuries that hampered his production. He’s getting older, but it’s not like you will be paying a premium to draft him, so he may be worth the late round selection. In 2013 he caught 52 receptions for 850 yards and 13 TDs. The question with Davis is can he be productive this season?
Defense/Special Teams
The 9ers defense was ranked 10th with 122 fantasy points on the year (ESPN Standard). They had 7 games where they scored 10 fantasy points or more. There have been a lot of transitions with their defense this offseason. There is going to be a drop off in production, but the question will be is how much? I think the 9ers DST won’t be as strong as last season, but still be good enough to be a solid a stream.
