The Los Angeles Angels have officially announced that starting pitcher Jered Weaver is headed to a 15 day stint on the disabled list, and he is set to have an MRI on his left hip Monday.
The Angels decided to make this roster move before Sunday’s finale against the Oakland Athletics. The organization decided to make this move after Weaver’s fourth straight loss on Saturday, as the Angels fell to the A’s 4-1. This move will give the right-hander some time to rest the aggravate hip he has been dealing with.
Weaver has stated that this hip aggravation has not been the root of his current slump on the mound, but the Angels are still being extremely cautious with their 32-year-old pitcher.

Weaver has had some struggles so far this season. Weaver is currently 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA, and he hasn’t earned a win since May 30th of this year. Weaver has been a dominant pitcher in years past, but he has struggled mightily in 2015. Weaver has given up 19 earned runs in his last 26 innings of work. If that isn’t a fantasy nightmare, I don’t know what is.
Weaver was a early-to-mid round draft choice coming into 2015 because a lot of experts, including myself, had the Angels slated to win the American League West, but they are currently 4.5 games behind the division leading Houston Astros, who were a surprise to most people.
I think that you should just drop Weaver completely from your team because he isn’t having a great season, and there are plenty of young, talented arms that are sitting there on your waiver wire. I did think that Weaver was a solid draft choice coming into 2015, but he has proved me wrong so far. I say you need to drop him, and look for another starting pitcher.
A name that comes to mind is Joe Ross, rookie pitcher for the Washington Nationals. Ross is only owned in 7.0% of all fantasy leagues at ESPN, so he is a viable option without question. He has only made three big league appearances, but he was able to shut down the Cubs and Pirates in two of those three starts. Both of those clubs are getting hot at the plate, and he racked up quite a few strikeouts against both clubs.
Ross is a great addition and a better choice than Jered Weaver.
