Jacksonville Jaguars 2015 Season Preview

The Jaguars finished 3-13 last season while placing 3rd in the AFC South Division. The Jaguars are in the middle of the rebuilding process; they should be improved from last season, but they are still going to have their ups and downs. They are trying to provide quarterback Blake Bortles some weapons by signing Julius Thomas in free agency , and by selecting T.J. Yeldon in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft.  The Jaguars is an exciting team who appear to have a promising future. Can the younger players develop enough this year to elevate the Jaguars in to playoff contention this year?

Quarterback

Blake Bortles

Bortles finished last season ranked 24th among quarterbacks with 239.30 fantasy points on the year while averaging 17.09 points per game. Bortles had 9 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more and he had 5 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Bortles is going to go late in fantasy drafts this year. I don’t recommend drafting him in redraft leagues, but he will be a solid stream during weeks when he is playing a favorable matchup.

Running Back

T.J. Yeldon

The Jaguars selected Yeldon in the 2nd round of this year’s draft. Yeldon is going to be the focal point of the Jaguars offense and he should experience a lot of touches. I project Yeldon to be a mid-level RB2 with RB1 upside during some weeks.

Toby Gerhart

Gerhart finished last season ranked 51st among running backs with 88.70 fantasy points averaging 6.34 points per game. Gerhart had 1 game where he scored 10 or more fantasy points. I wouldn’t recommend drafting Gerhart this year in fantasy drafts because his upside is limited, however I would snag him off the waiver wire if Yeldon got injured.

Denard Robinson

Robinson finished last season ranked 38th among running backs with 118.10 fantasy points averaging 9.08 points per game. Robinson had 4 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and 2 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. I don’t recommend drafting Robinson in your draft this year because Yeldon is forecasted to get most of the rushing attempts, which will leave Robinson with limited opportunities for fantasy production. Like Gerhart, I would pick up Robinson if Yeldon was to go down with an injury.

Wide Receiver

Allen Robinson

Robinson finished last season 65th among wide receivers with 119.80 fantasy points averaging 11.98 fantasy points per game. He had 6 games where he scored 10 fantasy points. Robinson’s season ended early due to a foot injury that he suffered in week 10. Robinson is being draft in the middle rounds, and he could be considered a boom-bust pick because he is highly athletic and has the pedigree of a break out candidate, but he is in a situation that could hamper his fantasy production. I consider Robinson a low-end WR2 with WR1 upside during weeks where he is facing a favorable matchup.

Marqise Lee

Lee finished last season ranked 88th among wide receivers in fantasy production with 89.10 fantasy points averaging 6.85 fantasy points per game. Lee had 4 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more. Lee was playing through injuries most of last year, which curtailed some of his production. Lee is going to be selected in the later rounds of drafts and may become a late round steal if he can stay healthy.

Allen Hurns

Hurns finished last season ranked 50th with 154.70 fantasy points averaging 9.67 points per game. Hurns had 6 games where he had 10 fantasy points or more, and 2 games where he had 20 points or more.  Hurns is a late round flier that could be a steal in your draft if he can get a serviceable amount of targets. I don’t recommend drafting Hurns, because there are players with a higher-upside late in your drafts, but he’s going to be a candidate to grab off the waiver wire later in the season.

Justin Blackmon

Right now he isn’t reinstated from his suspension, so he is completely off my radar until I see something of promise from him. If he gets reinstated and is playing I will gladly take a stab at him off the waiver wire if he’s getting enough targets to become fantasy relevant.

Tight End

Julius Thomas

Thomas finished last season ranked 10th among tight ends with 168.40 fantasy points while averaging 12.95 points per game. Thomas had 6 games last season where he scored 10 fantasy points or more and he had 4 games where he scored 20 points or more. Thomas isn’t playing with Peyton Manning anymore, so expect his fantasy numbers to tamper down some. Instead of him producing 12.95 fantasy points per game he is more than likely going to be around 8-10 points per game range. Thomas is going to be selected in the middle rounds of drafts this year, and that’s a little bit rich for my blood when you can get an effective tight end later in the draft. Thomas is going to be the main red zone threat on the team as he should soak up a lot of targets around the end zone.

Defense/Special Teams

Jacksonville’s DST finished last season ranked 20th in fantasy production with 85 fantasy points on the year. (ESPN standard scoring) The Jaguars defense isn’t going to be a unit that you are going to want to draft, but they can be a streamable option during any week if they are facing a 2nd or 3rd string quarterback.
