The St. Louis Blues have traded away T.J. Oshie to the Washington Capitals, who suddenly have a Big 3 that could make it to the Stanley Cup.

The NHL offseason is only in it’s infancy but already the deals are starting to shape what next season might look like.

According to NHL scribe Chris Johnston, the Capitals have acquired T.J. Oshie from the St. Louis Blues in a three-player deal that sends a draft pick back to the Blues.

Here’s a complete breakdown of the trade:

On the surface, this is a tough blow for the Blues, who are losing one of the best players in hockey by trading away Oshie. But things haven’t been working for St. Louis as of late, and the team needed to change some things up.

Whether or not trading away Oshie was the key to their future success is yet to be seen.

As for the Capitals, they have now acquired Justin Williams and T.J. Oshie in the span of a week to allow Barry Trotz some serious flexibility in the lines he draws up. Additionally, the Caps suddenly have a Big 3 of Oshie, Ovechkin and Williams that can band together and possibly bring Washington to the Stanley Cup for the first time since the Ovenchkin era began.

That’s the real upside here, as not only have the Caps acquired an American hero in Oshie but they have a roster of talent that is instantly a favorite in the East.
