Texas Rangers: Sellers

Following a miserable 2014 campaign and a season-ending injury to ace Yu Darvish, the Rangers looked to be in for another rebuilding season. Instead, they were one the surprises of the early season and played well behind a successful, pieced-together rotation and great production from Comeback Player of the Year candidate Prince Fielder.

However, a recent 5-10 stretch has brought Texas down to 41-42, 6.5 games behind Houston in the AL West. Even though the Rangers are just 2.5 games out of a wild card spot, there just doesn’t feel like there’s enough talent on the major league roster to seriously contend, and Texas’ recent form is probably closer to its true talent level.

Until recently, it wasn’t exactly clear what pieces the Rangers could sell that would generate a lot of interest. Fortunately for the Rangers, one major trade chip has emerged.

Over his last five starts, Yovani Gallardo has tossed an impressive 29.1 consecutive scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 2.56. Gallardo is in a contract year and likely won’t figure into the Rangers’ future plans when they are better poised to contend and could get a nice return as a sell-high candidate.
