Three days after the incident, the details of what exactly happened to New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul remain a mystery.
Pierre-Paul reportedly suffered a severe hand injury while attempting to light a firework on the Fourth of July. The extent of the injury is unclear, as rumors continue to swirl that Pierre-Paul may have some nerve damage, which could have a long-term impact.
The fact that Pierre-Paul remains hospitalized this long isn’t an encouraging sign. It now seems very possible that the 26-year-old could begin the season on the Non-Football Injury list.
New York would obviously like some medical clarity on how bad Pierre-Paul’s hand is to determine the best plan moving forward with just over two months remaining until the regular season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Giants visited Pierre-Paul in the hospital on Tuesday to gain some information, via ProFootballTalk.
The extent of the injury will have a huge impact on Pierre Paul’s future and looming pay day. New York or any other team would be interested in having Pierre Paul as an impact pass rusher long-term, as he has racked up 42 sacks in a five-year career, including 12.5 a season ago.
However, teams are going to be hesitant to commit a lot of money to Pierre-Paul after such an unnecessary off the field injury. The Giants have already rescinded a $60 million long-term offer, although Pierre-Paul likely wasn’t going to sign that anyway.
Perhaps an even more interesting question is if the Giants will rescind Pierre-Paul’s $14.8 million franchise tag that he will play under in the upcoming season. That would make Pierre-Paul a free agent, so the Giants would have to be absolutely sure this was a long-term injury to even consider doing so.
To make matters worse, Pierre-Paul could face criminal fireworks charges which may potentially lead to a suspension. The Giants will have to hope he’s being held in the hospital for precautionary reasons and that his potential punishment is minor, as they need him on the field.
No matter what New York found out on Tuesday, Pierre-Paul likely cost himself some money and potentially a few regular season games.
