Canadian forward Cyle Larin’s shot on an open net in the 2015 Gold Cup did not go as planned.

Scoring a goal in a competition as big as the CONCACAF Gold Cup has to be a dream realized for many players in the competition. During Canada’s first match in the group stage against El Salvador, forward Cyle Larin had about as good of an attempt as anyone will ever have to realize that dream.

The 20-year-old Larin got loose with the ball on his foot, which brought El Salvador’s keeper out. Larin juked to the right side of the box and left the goalie lying on the ground, leaving only an open net in front of him. That’s where things went horribly awry for Larin:

It’s one thing to try and get too cute with an attempt in that situation or to put it just wide. Yes, both of those instances would be heartbreaking, but not nearly as confidence-shattering as shanking it high and wide with no real chance of ever finding the back of the net.

Even as we marvel at his failure, you have to feel bad for the 20-year-old Larin. That’s the type of miss that can stick with the young forward and haunt him for the rest of the tournament. One thing that can be said with almost complete certainty is that he’ll keep his next attempt at an open net on the ground.
