After rumors popped up in the wee hours of the morning that the Brooklyn Nets and guard Deron Williams were working on a buyout, an agreement has apparently been made.
Williams had two-years and $43 million left on his contract with the Nets — a deal originally worth $100 million a few years ago. Rather than trade Williams, which would be a herculean task short of impossible, the Nets are buying Williams out with the plan to stretch the rest of the remaining dollars owed to him paid out over the course of the next few years.
That’s all technical, as the main story here is that Deron Williams has just entered the free agent pool that was beginning to get shallow.
According to David Aldridge from NBA.com, the Nets and Williams have agreed to a buyout that will release the guard from his contract with Brooklyn.
This isn’t really all that surprising, as it was reported in the early morning hours by Marc Stein from ESPN.com that the Nets and Williams were trying to figure something out that would split them up. Williams reportedly wants to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, with the Utah Jazz being a minor threat to steal him away.
The most likely landing spot for Williams is in Dallas though, where he will be playing for his hometown team and play savior to the horrible summer that Mark Cuban has been having.
