The New York Mets are hunting for a spot in the postseason, but they might need to be buyers at the trade deadline to make sure they don’t fall back.

For the first time in a long time, the New York Mets are actually contending for a spot in the postseason — something that fans are still getting used to. But the dream ride could be over sooner than everyone wants if the team doesn’t address a few areas of need at the trade deadline.

The Mets are no sure bet to make a trade before the deadline passes on July 31st, but they could be in the market for some depth in the outfield.

According to Marc Carig from Newsday, the Mets haven’t yet ruled out the possibility of trading for some outfield help given the lack of depth they have there at the moment.

If the Mets were to trade for outfield help, they’d be doing themselves a real solid. They’re managing to get by now, but we’re entering the last half of the season, where the marathon begins to morph into a sprint. New York currently sits two games back from the Washington Nationals in the NL East and are a game behind the Chicago Cubs for the last Wild Card spot.

Without a healthy Michael Cuddyer or Juan Lagares, the Mets are sorely lacking the depth in the outfield to throw out a solid lineup as the season begins to wind down. Trading for someone like Yeonis Cespedes might be out of the question — if not still a good idea — but New York could be in the market to acquire a smaller name at a lesser fee.

There’s still a lot of baseball left to be played this summer, but the Mets need to make a decision on what to do with their outfield depth if they want to continue to contend this season.
