Heading into the 2015 NFL season, aside from being hopeful about making it back into the playoffs, the New York Giants are pretty hopeful about something else: Getting Eli Manning inked to the contract extension that some see as a long time coming. Going into this season Manning is heading into the final year of his deal, and the team undoubtedly does not want to lose their franchise signal caller.
But, as the season approaches, the team seems pretty optimistic that they can sit down and get this ironed out so it’s one less worry off of their plate. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network this morning reported that the Giants hope to get something done rather soon.
Via Pro Football Talk:
"“This is another one where the Giants hope to do a deal either before training camp or early on in training camp,” Rapoport said on NFL Network. “My understanding is the Giants brass is confident in doing a deal in due time. Actually, just talking to people on both sides of this, it seems to make sense for both sides to do a deal, one that they think and hope will get done this year.”"
The best case scenario would be to get something in writing and signed before training camp starts soon, but that doesn’t appear to be all that possible. However, as long as they can get something done before the regular season starts so it isn’t hanging over their heads, then they should be in good shape.
While the Giants haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire as of late, you can see signs that this time can make it back near the top of the NFC East sooner rather than later. With the emergence of players such as Odell Beckham Jr., this is a team, especially with a talented coach like Tom Coughlin, that can put it all together at a moment’s notice — we’ve seen them do it before.
But, to get that accomplished, they’ll need Manning to be the leader of that movement.
