The New York Mets are trying to stay in contention in the NL East, and trading for out fielding help seems to be a top priority before the deadline passes.

The New York Mets are in contention for the NL East crown and remain a few games back of the Chicago Cubs for the final Wild Card spot in the postseason. All of this means the team is more than likely going to be buyers as the trade deadline approaches, and their need has been carved out.

Outfield depth and hitting is something the Mets need, as they must find a way to support their hot young pitching staff and they might find that in Padres outfielder Justin Upton.

According to Jon Heyman from CBS Sports, the Mets have a list of outfielders they seem interested in trying to deal for, including Justin Upton.

It would seem the Gerardo Perra is the best option from that list if for the only reason that he’s the hottest name on the trade market who isn’t a pitcher. While everyone is talking about Cole Hamels and Johnny Cueto, the Mets could sneak in and steal one of these three outfielders out from under everyone’s nose.

That being said, is Upton the best option or is he just the most realistic?

It’s been a tough go-around for Upton since leaving Arizona a few seasons ago as he bounced from Atlanta to San Diego and now possibly somewhere else. If that place ends up being New York, he’d fit into an outfield with Curtis Granderson and might work his way into being one of the more valuable pieces on the roster.

This isn’t a typical Mets roster where being good is almost a default of being able to hit the ball past the pitching mound. New York is contending and adding Upton could be a move that puts them over the top. That seems like a stretch though, as he wasn’t able to help the Braves and has been largely expendable in San Diego for all of his tenure.

But let’s not forget the player he was in Arizona when he was at the top of his game. If the Mets can get that Justin Upton, then they might have a tandem in their outfield between Granderson and Upton that is a pillar for years to come.
