Right before NFL training camps are set to get underway around the league, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced some big news on Thursday. The team announced that they have officially extended the contract of head coach Mike Tomlin through 2018.

Steelers president Art Rooney released the following statement via the team’s official website:

"“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2018 season,” said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II. “Mike has proven he is one of the top head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident he will continue to lead the team in our pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”"

The contract for the 43-year-old head coach is a two-year extension from his old deal.

Tomlin took over the Steelers in 2007, coming over from the Minnesota Vikings, taking over for longtime head coach Bill Cowher. In just his second season with the team in 2008, he led the squad to a Super Bowl victory over the Arizona Cardinals, becoming the youngest head coach to collect himself a Lombardi Trophy. In his eight seasons at the helm of one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, he’s taken this team to the playoffs five times, where he has compiled a record of 5-4.

He and the Steelers also made another Super Bowl appearance in 2010, although they lost to the Green Bay Packers.

Throughout his tenure, despite two Super Bowl appearances, Tomlin has drawn some criticism from the fans in Pittsburgh. Although, to be fair, this is one of the more tougher fan bases to please in all of sports. Overall in his eight seasons on the sidelines, outsiders looking in would consider him more than a success.

Pittsburgh made the playoffs last season after a two-year absence from the postseason, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round.
