The Miami Dolphins have released quarterback Josh Freeman, according to the team’s official Twitter page. Miami signed Freeman in the offseason in hopes of reviving his once-promising career, but things have apparently not worked out for the former Kansas State University star.

Freeman was slated to compete in camp to play the backup role to Ryan Tannehill. The other reserves include Matt Moore and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

Freeman was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 17th-overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Freeman has the perfect size to play quarterback in the NFL, listed as 6-foot-6 and 248 pounds. However, he was never able to consistently show his talents were worthy of a starting spot.

In his rookie season, Freeman completed 54.5 percent of his passes with a ghastly ratio of 10 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. However, things began to turn for Freeman in 2010 under head coach Raheem Morris. In a year that Tampa Bay went 10-6 but missed the postseason, Freeman threw for 3,451 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, while bumping his completion percentage to 61.4.

In 2011, Freeman threw for a career-high 3,592 yards but saw his turnovers issues crop up again. The former first-round pick tossed only 16 touchdowns but 22 interceptions, costing Morris his job. The following campaign saw the arrival of coach Greg Schiano from the University of Rutgers, but Freeman’s play did not improve. His completion percentage dropped to 54.8 percent and while he threw for 27 touchdowns, he was intercepted 17 times and fumbled on eight occasions.

In 2013, Freeman played in four games for Tampa Bay and the Minnesota Vikings, completing 37.7 percent of his passes. He did not appear in and NFL game last year.
