We don’t quite know yet what the Philadelphia Phillies plan to do with Cole Hamels by Friday’s MLB Trade Deadline, but we’re learning a little more about the fate of another arm on the roster — Jonathan Papelbon.

According to CSN Philly, Papelbon will indeed get his wish and be moved out of Philadelphia before Friday hits. For quite some time now, Papelbon has not been shy in letting it be known that he doesn’t want to be a member of the Phillies anymore, and they’re going to give him what he wants.

As for a potential landing spot, the latest word was that the Washington Nationals were apparently set to make a strong push for his services. Other than that, a move for Papelbon could be made by a surprise team as Friday draws closer, especially now that it’s out there that the Phillies are dumping him.

The one main issue in regards to a deal for Papelbon, though, is money. Papelbon is due a $13 million option next season, but that’s dependent on the number of games he finishes. So for obvious financial reasons, Papelbon certainly does not want to go somewhere where he’s not the closer. Pegging him as a setup man will not go over too well, and you can’t really blame him in a way.

But we expected the Phillies to be some movers before Friday hits, and now it looks like the wheels are in motion for things to start happening in the City of Brotherly Love. Now the question, aside from where Papelbon lands, turns to what they do with Hamels.
