2015 Trade Deadline: Should You Hang On To Joakim Soria?

facebooktwitterreddit

Another trade deadline means that Joakim Soria is on the move for the second straight year. The Tigers got much less in return than they gave for him last year. They gave up prospects Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel for Soria. Here is what Detroit got in return:

This trade is a disaster for Soria owners. Soria was 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA and 23 saves. He will likely set up Mark Melancon in Pittsburgh. Melancon is leading the National League with 32 saves and has a microscopic 1.32 ERA. If your league counts holds, Soria still has quite a bit of value.

He could still help out some in standard leagues. Soria averages nearly a strikeout per inning, and has a nice 1.05 WHIP to go with a solid ERA. He will still see the occasional save if Melancon needs the night off. You can do worse if you are a fan of keeping relievers around to bolster your ERA and WHIP numbers.

JaCoby Jones is the 11th ranked prospect in the Detroit system right now. He is hitting .260 with ten homers, 15 steals, and 60 RBI between high-A Bradenton and AA Altoona. Jones is a natural shortstop, but is blocked by Jose Iglesias at the major league level. The good news is that Jones likely won’t be ready for the majors for at least another year.

  • The trade of Soria will open up save opportunities in the Detroit bullpen with Joe Nathan still out. Alex Wilson picked up the save after Soria was traded on Thursday. He would seem to be the favorite going forward because of his 1.84 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. If you need saves, go pick up Wilson now. His peripheral numbers won’t hurt you even if he is not the full time closer.
