In 2009, the Indians were looking to build on a struggling pitching staff that was hoping to gain traction for the future. Masterson looked like the type of playing who the organization could potentially build with, but he could never really find consistency in his game.
The Red Sox, on the other hand, had a ton of young talent and were not afraid to move the 24-year-old pitcher in order to add a big bat to the lineup.
What did Boston get in return? None other than switch-hitting star, Victor Martinez.
Martinez was still relatively young at the time of the team, 30 years old, with plenty of time to improve the Red Sox lineup. He finished the final 56 games with the Red Sox smacking eight home runs with 41 RBI while hitting a scorching .336.
The next season, he .302 with 20 homers and 79 RBI before signing with the Detroit Tigers the following year. Boston did win the wild card position during the second half of the 2009 season with Victor aboard, but never an AL Pennant or World Series.
Still, you have to consider any team that gets VMart a winner.
