Oakland Raiders – D.J. Hayden

Why is he the pick?

The Raiders are starting to act like an actual organization. Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie has been able to add nice talent in the last few years, drafting or signing Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, Khalil Mack, Michael Crabtree, Justin Tuck, Curtis Lofton and Dan Williams. However, McKenzie is still waiting on 2012 first-round pick D.J. Hayden to make a name for himself.

Hayden needs to become the top corner on a Raiders team not exactly flush with young talent in the secondary. T.J. Carrie looks like a promising player, but Hayden was brought in to be a shut-down corner. Hayden has only played in 18 games over his first two seasons, dealing with injuries. Last year, Hayden was ranked 61st out of 108 corners by Pro Football Focus, painting him as mediocre.

What is at stake?

Being able to climb out of the AFC West’s basement. Oakland has finished last in each of the past two seasons. While the Raiders are probably going to finish last once more because of the overall strength of the division, a really solid pass defense would at least give them hope to finish better than fourth. Hayden has to be the man who can stop Jeremy Maclin, Demaryius Thomas and Keenan Allen.
