Going into Sunday, there were only 12 players in WNBA history to reach 5,000 points in their career. Now there are 13.

Sunday’s matchup between the New York Liberty and the Seattle Storm was supposed to be all about Becky Hammon. The Liberty honored her during the game and inducted her into their Ring of Honor. So in a way, it was. But Sue Bird decided to make some history herself.

Coming down the left wing in the second quarter, she found herself all alone and decided to fire up a three, which found the bottom of the net and made history.

Bird is now the 13th member of the 5,000 point club, but she’s the only member of the 5,000 point and 2,000 assist club. Finesse.

It’s been a rough season for the Storm, and they fell again on Sunday, but this was a special moment to remember for Bird. And hey, who knows. They’re still only a game and a half out of the final playoff spot out West. Maybe they’ll end up sneaking in after all.
