Jeff Hoffman, RHP, Colorado Rockies

Hoffman has the rare type of upside to potentially be the best prospect moved at this season’s deadline. As with countless other pitchers, health will be the question for Hoffman.

The 22-year-old from East Carolina was in contention to be the top pick of the 2014 draft before undergoing Tommy John surgery in the spring. Even with the surgery, the Blue Jays were willing to pick Hoffman ninth overall due to his combination of power and polish.

It’s all about the power for the 6-4 Hoffman, as he is hitting 99 miles per hour on his fastball already. Hoffman’s changeup also can tough 90, but it’s a plus curveball that makes him really intriguing right now.

Hoffman was able to return in May, posting a 3.21 ERA and 3.76 FIP in 11 starts at the High-A level according to FanGraphs. The strikeouts aren’t quite there, but Hoffman has looked solid in his recovery overall and is showing great command.

Toronto moved him to Double-A for two starts before the trade and Hoffman pitched very well. His first start with the Rockies’ organization was poor, although Hoffman did strike out six in 4.2 innings.

Hoffman wont be back at his full capacity until 2016 following the surgery. What exactly his top level looks like remains to be seen.
